Vitamin B1 and alcoholism

In this post we talk about Vitamin B1 and alcoholism.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is needed in the body to produce cellular energy from consumed foods. Without sufficient thiamine you can experience issues with memory, mood, and even more critical issues.

Vitamin B1 and alcoholism

The link between vitamin B1 and alcoholism is clear: approximately 80% of alcoholics do not have enough thiamine in their bodies, causing severe damage to the brain and other organs. The link between thiamine and alcoholism is straightforward: the more alcoholic drinks consumed, the less thiamine is absorbed, because alcohol interferes with the absorption of this vitamin in the intestine.

Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is required by all tissues and organs in the human body. It is required for the proper functioning of the brain, heart, kidneys, and liver, as well as for the metabolization of carbohydrates by certain enzymes. Thiamine is required by enzymes for a variety of functions, including protecting the body from free radicals, synthesizing DNA, and producing neurotransmitters.

In the relationship between thiamine and alcoholism, the cerebellum is particularly vulnerable. This part of the brain is in charge of physical coordination and is essential for learning. Korsakoff Syndrome and Beriberi are two of the most common neurological diseases caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Korsakoff syndrome is characterized by problems with learning and memory, and it is frequently found in conjunction with Wernicke’s encephalopathy, which is characterized by muscle incoordination and confused thinking. Beriberi primarily causes muscle weakness, gastrointestinal issues, and breathing difficulties.
