When you first begin to wield the steel mace, the uneven distribution of its weight will likely be the first thing that strikes you. It will cause you to question whether or not it weighs that much, to the point where you will weigh them yourself just to make sure it is accurate.
This occurs as a result of the fact that a weighted bell is attached to the end of a long steel shaft, which violates the laws of leverage. When you move your hand further away from the weighted bell, you will experience a greater sensation of its increased heaviness, and vice versa.
Training with a steel mace is very different from training with traditional weights like dumbbells, barbells, or even kettlebells. Due to the nature of training with a steel mace, you engage multiple muscle groups throughout both static and dynamic movements while contending with the forces of rotation.
When you grip the handle of the mace further away from the head of the mace, you increase the leverage, which in turn makes the task more difficult. Choking up means bringing the handle of the mace closer to the head of the weapon. Doing so reduces the leverage, which in turn makes the exercise simpler to perform.
Choking up on challenging exercises like the 360, the 10-to-2, and the mills will make it easier for beginners to control the Steel Mace in a manner that is both safe and under their own control. Holding the mace more closely to the head of the mace is what is meant by the term “choking up.”
The length of the handle has a significant impact on both how heavy the steel mace seems to be and how it swings. Leverage increases with the length of the handle, so a longer handle makes the steel mace seem heavier because there is more of it.
