In this post, we take a deeper look at how bovine works along with its benefits and side effects.

Collagen is an important part of bones, skin, muscles, and other parts of the body. People often take collagen supplements to promote skin health, among other things, but do they help? Colostrum is the milky fluid that flows from a Bovine’s udder in the first few days after calving before milk appears. This liquid contains proteins called antibodies.
These antibodies can fight disease-causing bacteria and viruses. Antibody levels in Bovine colostrum can be 100 times higher than in normal Bovine’s milk. Scientists have developed a special type of Bovine colostrum called “hyperimmune Bovine colostrum”. This special colostrum is produced by Bovines that have been vaccinated against specific pathogens and are rich in specific types of antibodies.
Bovine colostrum is mainly used for diarrhea and other infections.
How Bovine Works
Bovine colostrum contains many nutrients and antibodies. Hyperimmune Bovine colostrum is obtained from Bovines that have been vaccinated to produce specific antibodies that fight diarrhea-causing bacteria. These antibodies appear in colostrum, which is collected as a medicine.
These bovine antibodies are expected to help fight the disease in humans. However, bovine antibodies do not seem to absorb well. Therefore, it may not be active for many infections in humans.
Bovine Uses and Benefits
Bovine has been used for:
- Diarrhea. The use of Bovine colostrum appears to prevent infectious diarrhea in children with a history of this disease. It also appears to help shorten the duration of illness in children.
- Respiratory infections are caused by exercise. Oral consumption of Bovine colostrum can prevent upper respiratory tract infections in people who exercise. It can also reduce symptoms of respiratory infections.
- Diarrhea in people with HIV /AIDS. Consuming Bovine colostrum can help reduce diarrhea in people with HIV. Most studies used colostrum from hyperimmune Bovine.
- Influenza (flu). Eating Bovine colostrum can prevent the flu. It appears to be effective in people who have already had the flu shot. It can also be effective in people who are at risk of getting the flu.
- Diarrhea caused by rotavirus. The use of Bovine colostrum appears to reduce diarrhea in children with rotavirus diarrhea. Most studies used colostrum from hyperimmune Bovines.
Users claim the following, despite the lack of research:
- Colostrum athletic success may slightly improve performance after previous training.
- Bovine colo strumcan relieve symptoms such as diarrhea or constipation in children with autism. Bovine colostrum can also improve some behavioral problems. However, more research is needed to confirm this fact.
- Infections in people treated with anticancer drugs. The use of Bovine colostrum does not appear to prevent infection in children taking leukemia drugs. But more research is needed.
- Memory and thinking (cognitive function). Preliminary research suggests that the consumption of Bovine colostrum does not improve memory in older adults who also participate in an exercise program.
- Critical illness (trauma). Giving Bovine colostrum to a very sick patient in the hospital can prevent diarrhea. But it does not reduce the risk of blood infection or the risk of death.
- Consuming Bovine colostrum before meals can help reduce blood sugar levels after meals in people with diabetes. It can also lower cholesterol. But more research is needed.
- A sexually transmitted infection can lead to genital warts or cancer ( human papillomavirus or HPV). Preliminary research shows that applying Bovine colostrum to the vagina for 6 months can help improve cervical lesions in people with HPV.
- Disease caused by inadequate nutrition or the body’s inability to absorb nutrients. Oral consumption of Bovine colostrum may improve the condition of weight but not a height in young children who are not growing well.
- Multiple sclerosis (MS). Using Bovine colostrum can help treat MS symptoms. But not all studies agree.
- Swelling ( inflammation ) and sores in the mouth (oral mucositis). Bovine colostrum does not appear to prevent ulcers in children with leukemia who are taking cancer drugs. But it can help reduce your pain.
- Physical Performance in Seniors. Some research shows that consuming Bovine colostrum improves leg strength in seniors who do strength training. But it doesn’t seem to improve upper body strength or body composition.
- Disease caused by Shigella bacteria. Bovine colostrum may not help shigellosis in children who take antibiotics.
- Traveler’s Diarrhea Early research suggests that consumption of Bovine colostrum can prevent traveler’s diarrhea.
- Inflammation of the colon ( colitis ). There is preliminary evidence that rectal enemas containing 10% Bovine colostrum may be useful in the treatment of colitis.
- Upper respiratory tract infection. Bovine colostrum appears to reduce the number of upper respiratory tract infections in babies who receive them frequently. It may also help prevent upper respiratory tract infections in adult men. However, it does not appear to shorten the duration of upper respiratory tract infections when they occur.
- Enlarged prostate ( benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH).
- Thinning of the vaginal tissue (vaginal atrophy).
- Bacterial and fungal infections.
- Build lean muscle mass.
- Fat Burning
- Dry eyes
- Elevates mood and feeling of happiness.
- Wound healing.
- Increases stamina and vitality.
- Repair damage to the nervous system.
- immune system
- Slow down aging and reverse it
- Other conditions.
More evidence is needed to assess the effectiveness of Bovine colostrum in these cases.
How Bovine is Used
Oral: Bovine colostrum is likely safe for most adults when taken orally properly. Although most people do not experience side effects from Bovine colostrum, there are rare reports of problems such as nausea, vomiting, abnormal liver tests, and low red blood cell counts in HIV-positive people. There are also concerns about the possibility of contracting “mad Bovine disease” (bovine spongiform encephalitis, BSE) or other diseases from animal products. BSE does not appear to be transmitted through dairy products. But it is probably advisable to avoid animal products from countries where BSE has been reported.
When used on the skin: There is not enough reliable information to know whether Bovine colostrum is safe or has any side effects.
When using in the eyes: There is not enough reliable information to know whether Bovine colostrum is safe or its side effects.
When given as an enema (rectal): Bovine colostrum is likely safe for most people when given as an enema.
When given vaginally (intravaginally): Bovine colostrum is likely safe for most people when given vaginally as a cream or pill.

Bovine’s milk allergy: If you are allergic to Bovine’s milk or dairy products, you may also be allergic to Bovine’s colostrum. If yes, it is better to avoid it.
5 Benefits of Bovine Collagen Supplement
Bovine collagen supplementation has several health benefits:
Can improve skin health
Collagen is an important part of your skin. It plays a role in both skin strengthening and elasticity and hydration. As you age, your body produces less collagen, which leads to dry skin and wrinkles. However, several studies have shown that collagen peptides or collagen-containing supplements can slow down skin aging by reducing wrinkles and dryness.
A review of 11 studies, mostly in women, found that taking 3 to 10 grams of collagen per day for an average of 69 days led to an improvement in skin elasticity and hydration. These supplements may work by stimulating your body to produce collagen on its own. Additionally, collagen supplements can stimulate the production of other proteins that help structure the skin, including elastin and fibrillin. There are also many anecdotal claims that collagen supplements help prevent acne and other skin conditions, but the scientific evidence does not support this.
Can Relieve Joint Pain
Collagen helps maintain the integrity of cartilage, the rubbery tissue that protects joints. As the amount of collagen in the body decreases with age, the risk of degenerative joint diseases such as arthritis increases. Some research shows that collagen supplements can improve arthritis symptoms and reduce overall joint pain.
A review of studies in people with osteoarthritis showed that consuming collagen led to significant improvements in joint stiffness and overall arthritis symptoms. Scientists believe that excess collagen can build up in cartilage and stimulate its tissues to produce collagen. This, in turn, can lead to less inflammation, better joint support, and less pain. While the research is promising, experts caution that stronger evidence is needed before recommending collagen as a treatment for osteoarthritis.
Can Prevent Bone Loss
Your bones are mostly made of collagen, which gives them structure and strength. As the collagen in your body decreases as you age, so does your bone mass. This can lead to diseases such as osteoporosis, which is characterized by low bone density and an increased risk of bone fractures.
Studies show that collagen supplements can prevent the breakdown of bone which leads to osteoporosis. Postmenopausal women took daily calcium and vitamin D supplements containing 5 grams of collagen or a calcium and vitamin D supplement without collagen. At the end of the study, people who took calcium, vitamin D, and collagen supplements had significantly lower blood levels of a bone-breaking protein than those who took only calcium and vitamin D.
Another study showed similar results in 66 women in post-menopausal women who took 5 grams of collagen daily for 12 months. People who took collagen had a 7% increase in bone mineral density (BMD) compared to people who didn’t. BMD is a measure of the density of minerals like calcium in your bones. Low BMD is associated with weak bones and a risk of osteoporosis. While these results are promising, more human studies are needed.
Can Increase Muscle Mass
Collagen, as the most abundant protein in the body, is an important component of skeletal muscles. Studies show that collagen supplements help increase muscle mass in people with sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass that occurs with age. In a 12-week study, 27 older men with the condition consumed 15 grams of collagen during an exercise program. Compared to men who exercised but didn’t take collagen, they gained significantly more muscle mass and strength.
The researchers suggested that supplemental collagen may increase the synthesis of muscle proteins, such as creatine, and promote muscle growth after exercise. However, collagen protein is no more effective for building muscle or strength than whey protein. Collagen has fewer branched-chain amino acids, which play a key role in building muscle. Whey protein is a richer source of these amino acids. More research is needed to investigate collagen’s potential to increase muscle mass.
Can Support Heart Health
Researchers believe collagen supplements can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Collagen gives structure to arteries, the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Without enough collagen, arteries can become less flexible and elastic.
This can lead to atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by the narrowing of the arteries. This condition can lead to heart attacks and strokes. In a six-month study, 31 healthy adults consumed 16 grams of collagen daily.
From the beginning to the end of the study, they observed a significant reduction in arterial stiffness. In addition, their HDL (good) cholesterol levels increased by an average of 6%. HDL is a major risk factor for heart disease, including atherosclerosis.
However, more studies are needed on collagen supplements and heart health.
Other Health Benefits
Collagen supplements may have other health benefits, but these have not been extensively researched.
- Hair and nails Consumption of collagen can increase the strength of your nails, preventing brittleness. Also, it can help with hair and nail growth.
- Gut Health Although there is no scientific evidence to support this claim, some health professionals claim that collagen supplements can treat the leaky gut syndrome, also known as leaky gut.
- Brain health There are no studies on the role of collagen supplements in brain health, but some people claim that these supplements improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety.
- Weight loss. Proponents believe collagen supplements can promote weight loss and a faster metabolism. However, there are no studies to support these claims.
While these potential effects are promising, more research is needed before formal conclusions can be drawn.
Bovine Collagen Supplement’s Side Effects
Collagen supplements are generally well tolerated, with few reported side effects. However, some supplements are made from common food allergens such as fish, shellfish, and eggs. People allergic to these foods should avoid collagen supplements made with these ingredients. Some people report nausea and bloating when taking collagen supplements, but research has not consistently shown these side effects. There are reports that collagen supplements can cause other gastrointestinal side effects, such as heartburn and feelings of fullness. Regardless, these supplements appear to be safe for most people.
How Long Does It Take To See Results?
Collagen renewal is a slow process. As such, regardless of your purpose for using collagen, it will take at least 8 weeks to see significant results. Most studies use at least 8 weeks to assess collagen’s effects on skin health and joint pain relief, but other studies use longer periods, such as 12 months, for bone health. So you have to be patient and not expect results for a while.
